2021

My Story

In the past 11 years I have worked in a variety of settings, broad case types, different practice models, and held leadership and administrative roles. This has resulted in flexibility to adapt to the ever changing nature of our profession, OR environment, and non-traditional roles for the CRNA.

My Godfather was a solo CRNA and anesthesia provider in Western North Carolina and shadowing him at age 10, I knew “what I wanted to be when I grew up.” With this goal, I began my nursing career in 2006 at the Surgical ICU at the VA in Asheville after the completion of a BSN from Western Carolina University.

In the spring of 2011 I was an honors graduate from Duke's Nurse Anesthesia rigorous program that is currently ranked 3rd in the nation.

After graduation at 26 years old I had the opportunity to discover non-academic interests. Yoga, functional medicine, Scuba Diving, and travel were available to explore as a result of the career path I had chosen. In 2013 I moved from Baltimore to be closer to my family in the mountains of WNC, where I met and married my now husband Seth. And when he was presented with a “can’t turn it down” opportunity at Regulator Marine, we moved to the Outer Banks where we happily ate seafood and went diving for a few years.

In 2017 when our daughter was born, we quickly recognized the need for family support and I accepted a position to deliver anesthesia in the hospital where I was born 33 years previously. Seth had completed his Masters in Mechanical Engineering from NC State and became a dedicated stay-at-home father to our now two daughters. For the next several years, I concentrated on the heavy time and call obligation that came with providing anesthesia in a rural hospital (86h week).

My skills grew exponentially as I became an independent practitioner with no supervision in a critical access hospital, where I was the solo anesthesia provider for nights/weekends. I am now an expert in peripheral nerve blocks, fluent in writing policies, gathering stakeholders to implement system changes.
